About 30 km from the district headquarters and 14 km from Khanapur taluk headquarters, Nandgad is famous for Sangolli Rayanna. The historic Pratapgad Fort was built by Kittur ruler Mallasarja. Rayanna, the right-hand man of Rani Chennamma who fought for the survival of the Kittur State, was hanged at Nandgad. His tomb and the banyan tree planted over it recall the freedom struggle.
