A meeting point of empiresand cultures

Rattas and Kadambas built here. Yadavas, Hoysalas, Bahmani Sultans, Adil Shahis and Marathas each held its forts in turn. The British met Rani Chennamma's revolt at Kittur in 1824, and Gandhi presided over the Congress at Belagavi in 1924 — the only session he ever chaired.

  • Rattas

    Kamal Basadi at Belagavi Fort, raised 1204 under Ratta King Kartavirya IV. Parasgad fort, 10th century. The Chachadi agrahara, 1124.

  • Kadambas

    The Kamala Narayana Temple at Degaon, 1174, under the Goa Kadamba king Shivachitta Permadi.

  • Yadavas, Hoysalas, Bahmani Sultans, Adil Shahis and Marathas

    Each held Rajahamsagad fort in turn.

  • The British

    Met Rani Chennamma's revolt at Kittur in 1824. A century later, in December 1924, Gandhi presided over the Congress session at Belagavi — the only one he ever chaired.
